Before you begin your course and/or apprenticeship in the plumbing industry, it would be good to research whether this is the correct area of study for yourself ahead of time.
How can you do this? We highly recommend watching some videos on YouTube. In particular a channel called ‘Plumber Parts’. For instance, pipe bending is a crucial skill for any plumber and the below videos will help you familiarise yourselves with the tools and techniques:
Accuracy is key within the industry, therefore also research measuring techniques and conversion into mm as opposed to cm.
You will be required to wear safety boots in the practical workshop so start thinking about getting a pair. We would recommend Screwfix.
The plumbing team also highly recommend purchasing the course textbook to aid your studies (pictured below):
The City & Guilds Textbook: Plumbing Book 1 (ISBN: 978 1 5104 1648 2)
When you start your course at College, many of you will be looking to gain a plumbing apprenticeship. This is something we encourage so starting to build a CV as early as you can will maximise your chances of gaining employment. Research what a CV should look like and start to think what you will add to it during your time here.
Start researching the Health & Safety requirements of the industry (the text book mentioned previously will be very helpful) and familiarise yourself with regulations around the topic.
