Spanish Language Courses
We offer Spanish language courses at eight different levels from beginners through to intermediate plus. Each course runs for 10 weeks, with learners able to progress onto the next level upon successful completion of the previous stage.
Our Foreign Languages course offering is delivered by tutors who are experienced practitioners in various subject languages and specialist backgrounds, and their professional expertise and knowledge is highly valued by our students. At Colchester Institute we offer a supportive and stimulating environment for those who are working towards gaining confidence in their chosen language.
Gaining language skills may enhance career opportunities in a variety of industries and professions. Students may wish to progress to higher level language courses, and eventually to GCSEs or A levels.
*This course is not available to learners under 18.
This short course is not government funded, therefore low income or unemployment fee waivers are not available and additional learning support cannot be provided.

Beginners
Classes focus on basic conversation and pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary and learning about the culture of the country. There are no formal entry requirements however a willingness to engage and improve your skills is desirable.
Beginners Plus
This language course is suitable for people who have completed a beginners’ language course and who wish to improve their Spanish to aid career prospects, for relocation abroad or simply for a holiday.

Improvers
This Improvers course is for those who have completed Spanish Beginners and Spanish Plus courses, or the equivalent of 40 hours tuition, and want to continue studying the language. Again, the focus is on the communicative aspect of the language, with vocabulary and grammar to support this as appropriate, alongside cultural insights.
Improvers Plus
The Spanish Improvers Plus course is for those who have completed Spanish Beginners, Beginners Plus and Improvers courses, or the equivalent of 60 hours tuition, and want to continue studying the language. Again, the focus is on the communicative aspect of the language,  including a wider variety of grammatical structures and range of vocabulary.

Intermediate
The Spanish Intermediate course is for those who have completed Beginners, Beginners Plus, Improvers and Improvers Plus courses, or the equivalent of 80 hours tuition, and want to continue studying the language. The focus remains on the communicative aspect of the language, but will include a wider variety of grammatical structures, eg. verb tenses, and will extend the range of vocabulary covered, eg. through reading texts.
Intermediate+
The Spanish Intermediate Plus course is for those who have completed Beginners, Beginners Plus, Improvers, Improvers Plus and Intermediate courses, or the equivalent of 100 hours tuition, and want to continue studying the language. The focus remains on the communicative aspect of the language, but will include a wider variety of grammatical structures, including building confidence using different verbs tenses in the present, past and future. You will also extend your range of vocabulary and continue your appreciation of Spanish culture.
Upper-Intermediate
The Spanish Upper-Intermediate course is for those who have completed Beginners, Beginners Plus, Improvers, Improvers Plus, Intermediate and Intermediate Plus courses, or the equivalent of 120 hours tuition, and want to continue studying the language. The focus remains on the communicative aspect of the language, but will include a wider variety of grammatical structures, including building confidence using different verbs tenses in the present, past and future. You will also extend your range of vocabulary and continue your appreciation of Spanish culture.
Upper-Intermediate Plus
The Spanish Upper-Intermediate Plus course is for those who have completed Beginners, Beginners Plus, Improvers, Improvers Plus, Intermediate, Intermediate Plus and Upper-Intermediate courses, or the equivalent of 140 hours tuition, and want to continue studying the language. The focus remains on the communicative aspect of the language, but will include a wider variety of grammatical structures, including building confidence using more complex verb forms. You will further extend your range of vocabulary and continue your appreciation of Spanish culture.
