We offer French language courses at four different levels from beginners through to improvers plus. Each course runs for 10 weeks, with learners able to progress onto the next level upon successful completion of the previous stage.
Our Foreign Languages course offering is delivered by tutors who are experienced practitioners in various subject languages and specialist backgrounds, and their professional expertise and knowledge is highly valued by our students. At Colchester Institute we offer a supportive and stimulating environment for those who are working towards gaining confidence in their chosen language.
With outstanding tuition and learning resources and facilities, our courses offer excellent opportunities to learn a new language. Gaining language skills may enhance career opportunities in a variety of industries and professions. Students may wish to progress to higher level language courses, and eventually to GCSEs or A levels.
*This course is not available to learners under 18.
This short course is not government funded, therefore low income or unemployment fee waivers are not available and additional learning support cannot be provided.

This beginners French language course is suitable for people who wish to improve upon their career prospects, for aiding relocation abroad or simply for a holiday. There are no formal entry requirements however a general interest in the language is recommended. Classes focus on basic conversation and pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary and learning about the culture of the country.
The beginners plus language course is suitable for people who have completed a beginners’ language course and who wish to improve their French to aid career prospects, for relocation abroad or simply for a holiday. Classes focus on developing further conversation skills from the beginners’ language course, as well as continuing to practice pronunciation, simple grammar, a range of vocabulary and learning about the culture of the country.

This improvers language course is for those who have completed French Beginners and Beginners Plus courses, or the equivalent of 40 hours tuition, and want to continue studying. Again, the focus is on the communicative aspect of the language, with vocabulary and grammar to support this as appropriate, alongside cultural insights.
The entry requirements for this course are a general interest in the language plus completion of the French Beginners and Beginners Plus courses, or the equivalent of 40 hours tuition.
The French Improvers Plus course is for those who have completed French Beginners, Beginners Plus and Improvers courses, or the equivalent of 60 hours tuition, and want to continue studying French. Again, the focus is on the communicative aspect of the language, including a wider variety of grammatical structures and range of vocabulary.
