Adult Learners – English, Maths and Functional Skills

We offer a range of English and Maths courses for adults learners, ranging from entry level and Functional Skills programmes through to intensive GCSE resits.

Please use the menu below for further information about the courses we can offer you.

Adult GCSEs (English Language and Maths)

We offer a GCSE maths resit course over 32 weeks for those aged 19 and over.  This is a part-time course consisting of one 2-hour classroom-based session per week with a subject specialist tutor, and learners can undertake both GCSE Maths and English at the same time. Students are then expected to engage in self-study outside the classroom.

If you are over the age of 19 and studying a vocational course on a full-time basis, GCSE maths and English can be studied as part of your study programme.

If you are aged between 16 and 18 years old you will study English and Maths as part of your main full-time study programme.

Functional Skills Development in English, Maths and ICT

Colchester Institute offers Functional Skills courses in English and Maths for adult (19+) learners. These programmes provide learning opportunities ranging from Entry Level to Level 2 qualifications, and all our courses lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Courses are designed to build confidence, aid career development or to help you get back into work.

To support individuals to successfully complete their English and/or mathematic qualifications we offer functional skills via a number of methods to suit your learning style.

For those looking to attend fixed sessions, there are options to study weekly in the classroom at our Colchester Campus or over zoom. Those looking to learn at their own pace can study through our Adult Skills Centres, either independently online or in our Adult Skills Centres, where teachers are on hand to support you along the way. If you wish, you can continue to work independently from home to gain your qualifications more quickly.
