Our Digital Media students have been given the unique opportunity to work closely with Colchester City Council and the University of Essex to the launch Colchester’s newest walking route. The project Walk With Words is designed to connect key areas of Colchester City Centre, the University of Essex, and Greenstead.
The project consists of 16 unique wayfinding posts, each with a corresponding What3Words geocode. These posts act as “pause points” where walkers can use their smartphones to access dynamic digital content, offering an immersive experience that brings local stories and memories to life.
The media students directive is to create refreshing digital content, allowing them to gain invaluable, real-world experience. As the route continues to evolve, the community is encouraged to explore the trail, contribute their own stories, and celebrate Colchester’s vibrant culture through Walk With Words.
Paul Couling, Digital Media tutor at the Colchester Institute, said: “Being part of the Walk With Words initiative is an incredible opportunity for our students. It allows them to engage with a live project, take responsibility for researching and producing compelling content and collaborate directly with the public and key stakeholders. This hands-on experience in a real-world setting will not only enhance their creative skills but also prepare them for the fast-paced demands of the digital media industry.”
