University Centre Colchester | Student Council

The University Centre Colchester Student Council is the primary representation of the student voice at University Centre Colchester. It is comprised of student representatives from every course, and where possible each cohort of each course.

The Council meets no fewer than two times in every academic year and provides an open forum regarding the student experience at both course and at institutional level.

The Council is designed to provide student views and awareness of institutional student feedback measures and provides input on institutional initiatives to improve the student experience.

Guiding Principles and Student Council members

Student Council members are representatives of their peers and are required to:

  • Be Accountable – Student Council members are responsible to the students they are chosen to represent;
  • Consult – Student Council members are asked to put aside their own views and gather collective views, by talking and listening to other students, and to avoid any assumptions about the student experience;
  • Communicate – Student Council members need to feed back information to the student body. They must let their peers know what actions and outcomes have resulted from their feedback. They must do this by using efficient communication channels; this can be done in person, via social media, or any other appropriate means of communication;
  • Engage – Student Council members should act as a link between the student body and University Centre Colchester. It is important that Student Council members are fully engaged with opportunities to represent the student community;
  • Signpost – Student Council members might be the first point of contact for students with any issues, concerns or general enquiries. As such, they should be familiar with the structure of University Centre Colchester in order to signpost students to appropriate staff and/or services.
